About The GWG

The GWG serves as a US DoD, Intelligence Community (IC), Federal, and Civil community-based forum to advocate for IT standards and standardization activities related to GEOINT. The GWG performs two major roles: 1) as a Technical Working Group (TWG) of the DoD and IC CIOs Joint Enterprise Standards Committee (JESC); and 2) as a coordinating body for the GEOINT community to address all aspects of GEOINT standards.

The JESC "...recommends common Information Technology (IT) enterprise standards for the respective DoD and IC information environments, i.e. Joint Information Environment (JIE) and the IC IT Enterprise (IC ITE), to the DoD and IC CIOs [Chief Information Officers] for approval... The JESC activities and priorities align with the JIE and IC ITE goals and objectives, which call for standards-based implementation of the enterprise architecture to enable interoperability and to ensure information sharing and safeguarding." As a chartered Technical Working Group (TWG) under the JESC, the GWG is specifically chartered to select, adopt and promulgate standards that enable the discovery, access, use, integration, dissemination, exchange and exploitation of GEOINT. Refer to the GWG Charter.

The GWG is a National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG) forum that serves the Director, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), in executing the functional management responsibilities authorized in NSG Directive FM 1100, 14 August, 2014. In this role, the GWG leads and manages GEOINT standardization activities to meet the mission needs and strategic direction of the DoD JIE and IC ITE.

Using the JESC standards governance process, approved GEOINT standards are then cited in the DoD and IC Joint Enterprise Standards Baseline (ESB) hosted in the DoD Information Technology (IT) Standards Registry (DISR) [Account and PKI/CAC required] and in the IC Enterprise Standards Baseline (ESB) on JWICS.

The GWG consists of nine chartered focus groups made up of subject matter experts that address topical issues related to GEOINT standards.
